It produced ~55% of the global production or some 88,000 metric tonnes in 2024.
The country also has the second-largest resource endowment for future production, after China.

This lithium comes exclusively from hard rock mines, which are traditional mining operations, in minerals such as spodumene. Brine deposits are common in the Lithium Triangle.

The largest lithium mine in Australia is Greenbushes.
This mine is located south of Perth, in Western Australia.
It has been in operation for over 2 decades.

It’s owned by 3 companies:
- Albemarle $ALB, an American company listed on the NYSE, second largest producer globally,
- Tianqi, a Chinese company trading on OTC in the US and
- $IGO, an ASX-listed miner
