Where can I find reliable info on graphite?

Graphite is a naturally occurring form of crystalline carbon, known for its exceptional conductivity, lubricating properties, and thermal resistance. It exists in two main forms: natural graphite, mined from deposits, and synthetic graphite, produced from petroleum coke.

In industry, graphite is indispensable. It’s used in:

  • Lithium-ion batteries, where it serves as the primary anode material
  • Refractories and foundries, due to its high melting point and stability
  • Lubricants and coatings, thanks to its layered structure
  • Nuclear reactors, as a neutron moderator
  • Electronics and metallurgy, for its conductivity and heat resistance

As demand for electric vehicles and energy storage grows, graphite has emerged as a critical mineral, with supply chains under increasing scrutiny.

Backwardation vs contango

When a market is in contango, the forward price of a futures contract is higher than the spot price. This is common when there’s an expectation of tight supply in the years ahead.

Conversely, when a market is in backwardation, the forward price of the futures contract is lower than the spot price. This typically happens in commodity markets with an expectation of ample supply, as competition grows thus pushing future prices lower.

Bonanza!

The higher the grade, more metal can be potentially recovered, and a future mine would be more profitable, needing to move less rock. Normally for gold, anything above 2g/t is good. Above 20g/t? Bonanza.

Resources or reserves?

When companies are not (yet) sure if their deposit can be mined at a profit, they’ll have resources, not reserves.

Inferred is the underdog

Inferred resources are less reliable than both indicated and measured. More exploration needs to be done by the miner/explorer to increase confidence.

Word is gold

Never invest in a junior mining company where the word of management means zero.
